Mother-son dance, Celina Record

Celina's first Mother-Son dance on Saturday Lisa Ferguson, lferguson@starlocalmedia.com Mar 3, 2016 Step aside, daddies and daughters: The time for mommies and sons to shake their groove things has finally arrived in Celina. “Cowboys and Angels” is the theme of the first mother-son dance to be held in the city. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Celina Intermediate School. Celina High School’s cheer and Las Gatitas drill teams are hosting the dance as a fundraising event for the groups. “We pretty much are supporting ourselves,” explained Kelly Babb, Celina High School’s office manager who also oversee Las Gatitas. The drill team, along with the school’s cheer squads, raise funds throughout the year to help offset costs associated with purchasing uniforms and other performance gear and to pay for competition fees, among other expenses. “It’s pretty expensive to be in both of these organizations,” she said. While kicking around fundraising ideas last fall, cheer sponsor Jennafer Smullin said the high school’s cheer coaches “were saying, `We never get to go to a dance with our sons, so what If we do something like that?’” The Mother-Son dance comes on the heels of last month’s annual Father-Daughter dance, sponsored by the Fidelis Inter Se women’s organization, which since its inception six years ago has become a local tradition. About 150 mothers and sons are expected to attend the dance, which Babb said she would like to see become an annual event. “From what we’ve heard, the moms (in the community) are really excited about it,” she said. Sons, on the other hand, may be more stoked about riding a mechanical bull that will be set that evening. Individual ride tickets and unlimited-ride wristbands will be available for purchase. Cookies and punch will be served during the dance, which will also feature a candy bar, a photo booth and a professional DJ. Members of the dance and drill teams have been tasked with helping plan, orchestrate and decorate for the dance, which about 60 of the teens will attend. “We’ll have a lot of girls there,” Babb said, “so every boy should be able to dance with one of the cheerleaders or drill team girls.”
